Summary
The competition for land is growing due to the immense demand for land by different interest groups. For this reason, it is urgently required to find innovative solutions to reduce the use of agricultural land for non-agricultural purposes. The most important options in urban areas are the mobilization of inner development potentials and the renaturation of brownfields. On the other hand, fundamental tools in rural areas are pooling of areas for ecological compensation and multiple usage of land. The illustrated best practice examples in this paper should give impulses for a successful implementation of these measures.
