Summary
In the recent past the topics spatial planning and state development planning became relevant for the politics in South America. This development is closely related to the effort to get a sustainable mining of natural resources. This paper illustrates the difficult implementation of a land development viable for the future after centuries of colonization and the following political and social disturbances as well as the actual situation of spatial planning. The current state of development will be represented by means of the five big countries Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia and Peru. The central result is that the administrative structure and the legal basis concerning sustainable spatial planning is still in development because historical caused problems affected the development of spatial planning, especially the dictatorships of the 20th century. However, a political and societal awareness for the necessity of an integrated spatial planning can be identified in all investigated countries.
