Summary

The Mercator mapping of a sphere (spherical zone) into a plane is presented in form of an exact solution of an initial value problem (IVP). There are respective ordinary differential equations of the f/irst and second order. At the time point t = t1 there is an initial pattern representing a projection of a spherical zone (for instance of the Earth sphere) into the (y,z)-plane. For t > t1, the solutions of IVP yield a sequence of patterns, which converge for t ¥ towards the Mercator mapping of a spherical zone into a plane. The problem of periodicity of patterns of the spherical zone (due to multiple revolutions) can be explained using the proposed theory as a solution of an IVP. The basis is the coordinate system of metrical Mercator spherical coordinates P(r,y,z), which was introduced by the author. With respect to this system a point P in R3 is an intersection of three biharmonic surfaces. The metrical quantity z with the dimension [m] is directly proportional to the minimum of the main curvature radius of the biharmonic surfaces z=const. (surface of revolution). Choosing the simplest possible hypothesis r = ct and introducing it into the coordinate system of metrical Mercator spherical coordinates results in a relation with kinematics. The contribution contains three examples.
