Summary
Comprehensive knowledge of the German building stock is considered to be essential for the implementation of climate and resource protection policies. Little is known about the dynamic submarket of non-residential buildings, which comprises about half of the German building stock according to available estimates. Even basic information on the scope and structure of the total stock is missing. Official statistics only provide information on demolition and new construction, possibly allowing conclusions with regards to the dynamics in this segment. However, the Federal Office of Statistics assigns this information on the basis of a classification that is unsuitable for describing the dynamics of the stock and is not applicable to internationally discussed typologies. In order to identify a more detailed description of the non-residential building stock, a typology will be developed which meets the requirements of a generalizable, internationally adaptive and exhaustive classification of the non-residential building submarket, enabling research on interdependencies between stocks and their respective external drivers.
