Summary
Open-cast lignite mining in the Rhenish Area is accompanied by land consolidation procedures in accordance with the Land Consolidation Act (FlurbG) to eliminate rural cultural disadvantages as a result of mining and to improve the agricultural structure for competitive agriculture after recultivation or parallel to open-cast mining for the relocation of infrastructures. The decision of the federal government to phase out coal-fired power generation by the end of 2038 at the latest will trigger a significant structural change in this area. In the present article, the contributions of rural land management to the development of the Rhenish Area are shown and the focus is on the future tasks in the upcoming structural change.
