Summary
Internationally, the political, technological and social contexts in which land managers operate have changed significantly in recent years. Overall, social technologies have made human interactions more global, complex and less site specific. Moreover, it can no longer be assumed that the existing regulations will work without any problems or obstacles, and in the absence of such rules, only the States are the key stakeholders what the de facto rules will be. This quandary requires new insights into how to secure or change the relationships between people and the land. In this article, two scientific topics are discussed: »Human Geodesy« and »Alternative and Extended Cadastral Systems« in land management. These two topics form the basis for current and future research activities, which aim to develop more conceptual foundations for land management.
