The Infrastructure for Spatial Information in Europe (INSPIRE) provides the frame for European spatial data management. The implementation period is approaching its final deadline in 2021. Technical solutions and organisational structures are well established today. INSPIRE now faces new challenges, as requests and expectations on it are rising. The development of INSPIRE should focus on bringing together user requirements and the opportunities of a European spatial data infrastructure. Current issues and precisely termed demands allow INSPIRE now to set the course for the future.
