Summary
The legal background of land consolidation in Austria is still focussed on improving farming structures. Managing non-agricultural land use demands is nevertheless a relevant issue in Austrian land consolidation schemes. This paper outlines land use-related challenges demonstrating the importance of an intensified land management especially for public interests and points out the advantages of land management by multifunctional land consolidation using flood protection and river restoration as examples. As a conclusion options for improving the institutional framework of multifunctional land consolidation schemes are presented aiming at an enhanced coordination of private and public land use interests in rural areas.
