Summary
In order to promote Geodesy as a profession, it is essential to make training programmes attractive for executives and to illustrate them with specific examples of some possibilities for professional practice. The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) is the world’s largest and most important professional association of real estate specialists. The Oberprüfungsamt für das technische Referendariat (High Board of Examination for Post-Graduate Civil Service Training) carries out the German state examination in this field. Holders of a Master’s degree in Science and Engineering, especially in Geodesy/Surveying and Geoinformation, can take the examination to qualify as executives in the public and private sectors – including the professional field for the valuation of real estate. Both institutions have agreed on a cooperation agreement which is to become effective on June 1st 2015. Under this agreement, RICS recognises the high standards of the state examination for Geodesy/Surveying and Geoinformation conducted by the Oberprüfungsamt and considers them demanding enough to grant fully qualified geomatic surveyors direct access to RICS membership and allow them to use the title of »Professional Member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors« (MRICS) without taking an additional assessment of professional competence which is normally required worldwide. This cooperation agreement constitutes a significant milestone in the spirit of the initiative for young professionals of the German Society for Geodesy, Geoinformation and Land Management (DVW e.V., www.dvw.de) within the initiative »Arbeitsplatz Erde« under the umbrella »Die Geodäten«.
