Summary
Located in the Icelandic highlands the Kárahnjúkar Hydro-Electric Project represents one of the largest recent engineering projects worldwide. In the final stages the question arose how to verify the structure of the sectionwise applied shotcrete coating in the approximately 40 km TBM driven headrace tunnel. The article at hand provides an introduction to the project itself as well as it explains a laser scanner based procedure that obtained representative shotcrete thickness, volume etc. without a pre-shotcrete reference scan and allowed sufficient geo-referencing without connection to the tunnel traverse points.
