The Smart City-Initiative in Hamburg aims to offer an increase in comfort and quality of life to the cities ever-growing population. The Hamburg Port Authority (HPA) adds to this endeavor with their smartPort approach. Therefore the HPA relies on innovative technologies making better use of the existing infrastructure and improving it’s utilization. One of these technologies is a smart Sounding-Table which assists navigators in planning ship arrivals. A 55’ multi-touch-table replaces approx. 200 m² of paper charts previously used by the mariners and helps them to improve the safety and efficiency of the vessel traffic on the Elbe. This article introduces the digitization of paper charts on the sounding-table and describes associated challenges.
