Summary
The question of the location of Thule is newly investigated taking into account the available ancient information. Previous interpretations of this information are discussed. The investigation reveals that Pytheas’ Thule corresponds approximately to the region of Norway between about 63°20' and 66°16' latitude. One source concerning Thule are the handed down latitudinal data of Eratosthenes. These are partly explained by the lengths of sea routes and by a value of the obliquity of the ecliptic, which has been attributed only to Hipparchos so far. Furthermore it is shown that Ptolemaios’ position data for Thule do not refer to Pytheas’ Thule but to Shetland.
